Tartu

Tartu was first mentioned in a chronicle from the year 1030 A.D. Over the centuries it has been an important center for trade (as a member of the Hanseatic League), religion, cultural growth and education. University of Tartu (originally named Academia Gustaviana) was founded in 1632 by the Swedish ruler Gustav II Adolf. After the subsequent turbulent times it was re-opened in 1802 as a german-speaking imperial university and has been a significant research center ever since. Over the years many renowned researchers have been connected to either Tartu or the University, for example such prominent authors as Yuri Lotman and Jakob von Uexküll, among several others.
